iThings 2 Collard Greens Summer Day Camp for Girls is entering its 5th week. Nannie Helen Burroughs is smiling down as she sees the work with little girls dedicated to her memory.
What an exciting summer for the girls, their families and the staff of iThings 2 Collard Greens. Each day is fresh and new as we have come together in our camp community practicing love in action! Reinforcing the teachings of Nannie Helen Burroughs of a clean body, mind, spirit and home, our little girls have learned quite a bit about a lot of things – sewing, knitting and gardening, meditating, yoga, table etiquette, nutrition, health and hygiene. In this no technology camp they are jumping rope, playing dodge ball, hula-hooping, throwing jacks and playing the old-fashioned card games - I Declare War, Crazy Eights and Fish! Each morning they meditate and speak the affirmation of they day as they care for their mind and spirit. They have participated in altar building. They practice yoga and public speaking. They dance and learn table etiquette. Nutrition and health and hygiene classes emphasize the importance of caring for the body. Their cultural enrichment also included field trips to museums and parks and participating in the 137th birthday celebration of Mary McLeod Bethune in the shadow of her statue at Lincoln Park in Northeast Washington.

Our little ones have learned powerful and motivational songs.. In daily circle, they share their gratitudes and forgivenesses and remember their personal ancestors. In class, they study the contributions of the ancestral woman their group represents – Mary McLeod Bethune – Miss Mary’s ages 5-6,  Maggie Lena Walker- Miss Maggie’s ages 7-8, Dorothy Irene Height – Miss Dorothy’s ages 9-10, and Nannie Helen Burroughs girls’ ages 11-13.
All of this could not be done without the excellent staff, the Summer Youth Employee’s and the volunteers who have turned out to support us in their areas of expertise or just to lend a hand! God is good and has provided everything we needed!
Tuesday, July 31st at 12 Noon, we will have our culminating luncheon ceremony at Peoples Congregational Church in Washington, DC where the girls will strut their stuff for their parents. We are grateful for our time together here in DC before a select group travels to SC for a country retreat where they will learn more about the “ways†of woman and how to “be†a woman!
You can still contribute to our cause as we raise money for transportation from Charlotte,
NC to Medissage Center in Mount Croghan, SC where the girls will be for one week!
