WHAT A FUN(D)-RAISER!!! Thu, 13 Feb 2014 00:10:07 +0000 Continue reading ]]> corcoran Our third annual fundraiser was a SMASHING SUCCESS!!!

The benefit concert featuring Corcoran Holt and Friends along with Master See was a standing room only affair held at the Kingsbury Center on 14th Street, NW on Sunday, February 9 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm.

This shall be remembered as one of the best Black History Month events in 2014 for the vibes were so healing and uplifting! Positive people poured in and Arts For Our Children Inc. surpassed our goal! Donations and in-kind contributions are still pouring in!.

Certainly all in attendance enjoyed the Soul Beat Sounds of Master See and the jazzy healing and swinging bounce music of our very own, Corcoran Holt on bass, MacClenty Hunter on drums and Vernell Brown on piano who are the rhythm section for the

Grammy-nominated Kenny Garrett Band. They were joined by DC’s own Brian Settles on horn. Elders and all were up dancing to the jazzy and swinging vibes. What a great concert and community event for the 2014 iThings 2 Collard Greens Summer Enrichment Program for Girls sponsored by Arts For Our Children Inc.

kathyTo God Be the Glory! We appreciate the outstanding community support, all who sold advance tickets, served wine and refreshments, worked the reception table, took pictures and video, and made additional tax deductible contributions.

For the sake of our children we stand!

iThings 2 Collard Greens Version 2.0 Mon, 01 Jul 2013 09:53:32 +0000 Continue reading ]]>

Today, July 1, 2013, kicked off iThings 2 Collard Greens Version 2.0. . With 50 girls and 20 counselors we began another summer exploration into the life of today’s girls becoming tomorrow’s women.

Opening circle of song-singing, meditation, movement and sharing was followed by yoga, creating vision boards, more orientation and ancestor altar-building.  The girls are exceptional in their focus, discipline and ability to sit still for an entire 5 minutes! We discussed the concept of the most powerful words – “I AM” – and what words to use behind that phrase. It was refreshing to witness their willingness to be authentic and honest!  To be a little girl again . . .

Tomorrow we begin knitting, self-massage, dance classes and gardening! And Friday they learn to tie-dye!  We are in for another fun summer. . Thanks to the Trust and all of you who continue to make contributions to support our work.  Nannie Helen Burroughs, Dorothy Height, Maggie Lena Walker and Mary McLeod Bethune live through these girls!

Jazz fundraiser for girls summer program Fri, 22 Feb 2013 17:13:04 +0000 Continue reading ]]>

examinerKayla Bell, 8, can’t wait to return to camp this year. That’s why a Feb. 23 fundraiser at Seekers Church is so important to her and other girls who attended a summer program called iThings 2 Collard Greens. IThings refer to things like cell phones and computers. The program was created last year by Kathy English Holt, after she attended a retreat while recovering from a health condition. Holt said she was reading a book about Nannie Helen Burroughs at the time. “I could feel Nannie Helen Burroughs telling me to take girls to the retreat center because there is still a need for life skills training,” Holt said.  [read more...]

Annual Fundraiser on Saturday, February 23, 2012 Mon, 04 Feb 2013 22:34:12 +0000 Continue reading ]]> ithings-flyerDear Family:

Happy Black History Month!

Many of you know and supported iThings 2 Collard Greens, the summer program I founded last year in which 52 girls were exposed to the teachings and philosophy of Nannie Helen Burroughs, Mary McLeod Bethune, Dorothy Height and Maggie Lena Walker – four dynamic ancestral African American women of the 20th century.  It was a huge success and we are gearing up for this year!

My son, Corcoran Holt, a jazz musician in the tradition of the elders, and a student of our very own, Dave Yarborough, will be in concert for our annual February fundraiser (which is also an excuse to celebrate my birthday!).  Corcoran  (see )is a very seasoned musician who currently plays and tours with Kenny Garrett, The Heath Brothers and other well known jazz musicians of our time (and of yesteryear!).  Tickets are only $20.00 and the event will be held at Seekers Church on Saturday, February 23 from 5:30 – 9:30 pm.

I hope you can join us to hear some good jazz and hear about a back-to-basics life-skills summer experience for girls.

You can contact me at 202-368-8721 or Senghor Baye at 202-256-2518 for tickets. Checks should be made payable to Arts for Our Children, Inc. – the non-profit which sponsors the camp.

Thank you so much for your support!
